The Open Championship Betting Recap

Congrats to any Cam Smith ticket holders, and deepest apologies to anyone holding a Rory outright. We saw an amazing 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews that ended with Cam Smith taking home his first career major thanks to an unreal bogey-free 64 on Sunday highlighted by a Back 9 30.

Depending on when and where you bet his outright, Cam Smith was anywhere from +2000 to close to +3000. Betsperts Golf’s very own Ron Klos cashed a Cam Smith ticket at +2800 this weekend, making it the 3rd consecutive weekend the Betsperts Golf crew has cashed an outright.

If you bet Cam every which way this week, congrats again! Let’s take a look and see how well you did. Smith cashed his Top 5 odds at an appealing +650 number. His Top 10 odds stayed at +390 just about most of the week on FanDuel. Lastly, his Top 20 number hit at +225 for the tournament.

  • Said it to start the recap, but I’ll say it again, if you had a Rory outright, I’m so sorry. Rory looked destined to win his first major in 8 years. After three consecutive rounds in the 60s, Rory came into Sunday tied with Viktor Hovland at -16, and after 9 Rory held a 3-shot advantage over Hovland and looked like he’d cruise. Then Cam Smith’s birdie barrage happened. Rory burned edge after edge on the back and couldn’t get one to drop. After an amazing eagle (and overall performance) by Cam Young on 18 to jump to -19, Rory had to settle for an 18-under, 3rd-place finish. Rory entered the week as the favorite on FanDuel with +1100 outright odds. He still managed to cash his Top 5 (+370), Top 10 (+230), and Top 20 (+162) numbers.
  • While he didn’t win, Cam Young (+9600 outright) had himself a very successful weekend. Bookended bogies on his Sunday Front 9 may have cost him in the end, but a beautiful eagle on 18 vaulted him into 2nd place in addition to his 1st Round leader prop he hit with an 8-under 64. Young certainly looks like a threat come major season next year when The Masters rolls around. Young cashed his Top 5 (+1600), Top 10 (+800) and Top 20 (+420) numbers.
