24 of the world\u2019s best players will tee it up in only ten days at Italy\u2019s Marco Simone Golf and Country Club for the 44th playing of the Ryder Cup. This year\u2019s event will begin on September 29th and take place over three days with 28 total matches. The American team will attempt to win its first Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993. As the anticipation builds, here are some news and notes to stay informed on happenings for both teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team Europe in Good Form at the BMW PGA Championship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The European Team had a strong showing at this past week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club. All 12 members of the team made the cut and seven finished in the top 10, including Tyrrell Hatton finishing as runner-up, Jon Rahm in fourth place and Viktor Hovland in fifth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I take some confidence from that,” Hatton said. “Looking forward to the very special weeks to come. Just to have that team sort of bond and the atmosphere that we create in that team room is amazing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryder Cup veteran, Rory McIlroy finished seventh at Wentworth and expressed confidence in both his game and the form of the European team. “Everything’s headed in the right direction,” he said. “I’m not far away. My good swings are good swings and I can hit good shots. Just managing the misses and just making sure that there’s not a lot of them in there. We’re in a good spot,” McIlroy said. “We had a really good day in Rome on Monday, the team’s been shaping up really well for the last couple of months. Everyone’s been in pretty good form.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, just two members of the U.S. team were in action last week at the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. Justin Thomas finished in fifth place and, though the competition was weak, may have turned a corner with his game. He gained strokes on the field in each of the four categories including five strokes on approach and six with his short game. The most controversial pick on either side, three rounds in the 60s should quell some of the doubt regarding the selection of Thomas. Two-time defending champion of the Fortinet, Max Homa also had a strong showing finishing seventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sergio Garcia attempts to buy Ryder Cup eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the Telegraph<\/a>, Sergio Garcia attempted to pay \u00a3700,000 in fines to the DP World Tour in order to regain his eligibility for this year’s Ryder Cup. The story said that DP World Tour officials, however, turned down the plea from Garcia because he resigned his tour membership, which disqualified him from being eligible for the European team, and that he could not regain his membership in time for this year\u2019s matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garcia has known for awhile now that he had no chance of making the team this year. \u201cI talked to (Captain Luke Donald) two or three weeks ago,\u201d Garcia said a couple of months back. \u201cObviously I had to make some decisions when it comes down to the DP World Tour, and I wanted to see where I stood in regards to the Ryder Cup. Luke is a good friend, but I wanted him to be sincere and tell me the truth, and he pretty much told me I had no chance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marco Simone Golf Club<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, in perhaps the most unsurprising news of all, the European team is growing out the rough at Marco Simone GC with the hope that its difficulty will present an advantage for their team over the U.S. team. The goal is to prepare the course to punish inaccuracy with tight fairways lined with thick rough. Slow greens are also expected in comparison to what the American players are accustomed to out on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh off a short trip to Rome to play the course at the Marco Simone club and bond as a team over dinner, Shane Lowry remarked, that “the rough is pretty brutal in spots.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After playing practice rounds at the course, McIlroy said<\/a>, “In terms of just the condition of the course, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen better fairways. I think the fairways are so pure to hit off and the greens are in great shape, and everything. It’s been a hot summer over there and the course is in fantastic shape.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McIlroy also highlighted the importance of accuracy off the tee, telling reporters: “You miss fairways then you’re going to struggle to get to the greens. I think there’s some holes, there’s a couple short par-fours where if you’re hitting driver off the tee and you miss fairways, you should be punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s a couple longer holes that maybe the rough is not quite as severe and you can at least get like a seven or eight-iron on it and advance it quite a bit down the fairway.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahm echoed McIlroy’s comments, adding: “It’s penal. It’s difficult. You have to put the ball in the fairway. It’s not the longest golf course, right, so it’s going to make you think a little bit if they keep it that way.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
