The last two PGA Tour events have been won by Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, who finished first and second the last time The Open was in Hoylake back in 2014. This year’s edition will see Royal Liverpool play as a 7,383-yard Par-71. Overall, 71 yards have been added to the 2014 scorecard, but a few changes to holes and layouts on the back nine provide a slightly different look than in years past.

It’s difficult to pull forward any meaningful data from a course that comes into play once every eight to ten years. The highly volatile nature of just four rounds of golf, plus the elements that you find on the coast of a links course, makes looking too deep into the 2006 and 2014 editions a fool’s errand, in my opinion. Coastal links courses can look different each day, with wind and rain greatly impacting how each round will play. Locals report that the spring and summer were extremely dry, but the past few weeks have seen a fair amount of rain, with the greens more receptive than anticipated during early week practice rounds. The late-week forecast looks wet, so it should be an interesting week.

What we know about Royal Liverpool is that controlling your golf ball off the tee is critical. Tiger Woods famously gave his driver and 5-wood the week off on his way to victory here in 2006, clubbing down and hitting mostly a 2-iron, focusing on avoiding the tall fescue, deep pot bunkers, and penalty areas that surround most landing zones off the tee. Driving accuracy is crucial to success but difficult to contextualize because the accuracy data that we have access to doesn’t properly capture less-than-driver accuracy. An inaccurate driver, like Cam Smith, likely isn’t hitting a ton of drivers this week, so dinging him for spraying his driver misses the point.

To fill out my betting card for this week’s Open, I’m focused on strong current form, both in baseline strokes-gained metrics and finishing positions, along with a history of strong performances at The Open and links-style setups.

For more course details, check out Ron’s course preview. It’s the best in the business, bar none. Here are a few interesting nuggets about Royal Liverpool:

All aspects of a player’s game will be tested at Hoylake. Along with tactical aptitude, accuracy off the tee and avoiding the numerous hazards will be paramount for success this week. Players who don’t keep the ball in the fairway have little chance to score. Royal Liverpool will also test efficiency with mid-to-long irons in potentially fierce crosswinds, short-game skills from a variety of recovery locations, and lag putting on slower greens. It’s one of the more fair links courses and favors the elite ball-strikers.

Royal Liverpool features three par 5s, four par 3s, and 11 par 4s. Two of the par 5s are over 600 yards and will be difficult to reach in two shots. The par 3s are also quite lengthy, with three of them playing over 190 yards. And with seven of the par 4s measuring over 450 yards, long iron play will be crucial this week. Two of the main scoring opportunities come from the potentially driveable par-4 4th and the short 520-yard par-5 5th.

With six of the driving holes having out-of-bounds in close proximity to the fairway, along with an abundance of penalizing fairway bunkers near the landing zones, off-the-tee performance may decide who wins the 151st Open Championship. Strategy, in the form of club selection, and accuracy will be of the utmost importance. Players confident in their driving abilities definitely have the option to hit more high-risk, high-reward shots off the tee.

My goal with this piece is to touch on the golfers I’m targeting this week. There are millions of ways to bet on this beautiful game, so I’ll share my opinion on the best way to bet on each golfer in my player pool at this week’s event. Golf is a crazy game, and winning golf tournaments is incredibly difficult, but I keep wrestling with the inarguable fact that we’re in the midst of a historic season from Scheffler, and he has just two wins and zero majors to show for it.

He hasn’t finished outside the top 12 since October 23rd, 2022. For context, that was Week 7 of the NFL season. He’s finished inside the top 5 in seven consecutive starts, which includes a T2 at the PGA Championship and a solo third at the U.S. Open. He’s the best player in the world and equipped to thrive regardless of what Royal Liverpool throws out at him.

To Win: +750 BetMGM

Top 10: -125 BetMGM

Cam Smith

I had the defending Open champ on my shortlist of contenders last month, and after a strong opening round at LIV Golf’s London event two weeks ago, I jumped on the best number in the market, knowing it would crater if he won. That’s exactly what happened.

While I acknowledge that last year’s host course St. Andrews plays vastly differently from what we should expect from Royal Liverpool, I believe an in-form Cam Smith can contend anywhere. Wayward drives are the lone flaw in his arsenal, so I expect we’ll see him execute a less-than-driver philosophy whenever possible. He’s a remarkable scrambler, and that’ll matter this week with these small greens and shaved runoffs at Royal Liverpool. The 27/1 that I poached is long gone, but at 20, he’s still a play.

To Win: +2700 FanDuel

Top 10: +140 BetMGM

Brooks Koepka

The casual golf fan may not know that young Brooks Koepka cut his teeth in Europe on the Challenge Tour. He’s intimately familiar with links golf and has thrived at The Open, though his mantle is lacking a Claret Jug. Koepka posted four top-ten finishes in five Open starts prior to last year’s missed cut, but I’ve seen enough from Brooks this year to throw out all of 2022, knowing full well that he was not right physically or mentally.

I took advantage of an odds boost to bolster his price out to 30, but as of this writing, I still see 22/1 in the market, and it’s one of the best values on the board.

To Win: +3000 FanDuel

Top 20: -110 BetMGM

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland winning major championships is inevitable. After doing most of his best early career work during the swing season, Hovland is now beating up on the big boys more consistently. Last year’s T4 at St. Andrews was followed up by a T3 at The PLAYERS, a T7 at Augusta, a T2 at Oak Hill, and a solo 19th at LACC, which came on the back of his win at Memorial. We’re not just talking about Mayakoba and Hero World Challenge wins anymore.

Hovland is one of the best ball-strikers in the world and is long and straight off the tee. His short game is often referenced as his weakness, but he’s gained strokes around the green in 10 of the 12 majors that he’s played with shotlink data, including all three majors this season. Playing his college golf in the wide-open prairies of Oklahoma likely helped increase his in-the-wind reps too. North of 20, this is still a play.

To Win: +2200 FanDuel

Top 20: -110 BetMGM

Collin Morikawa

Collin Morikawa’s 2021 win at Royal St. George’s flew in the face of the traditional trends crowd since it was his Open debut, and history has favored experienced golfers at The Open. It’s incredible to think that we haven’t seen Morikawa win since holding off Jordan Spieth that Sunday in July, but here we are.

I love what we saw and heard from Collin Morikawa last time out after losing in a playoff to Rickie Fowler. His post-playoff press conference sounded like a guy who found something over the course of his four rounds in Detroit. He’s now gained strokes putting in four consecutive events, while his off-the-tee accuracy and dialed-in approach game have remained on point. He skipped the Scottish Open, choosing to get over to Europe and play more traditional links courses in preparation for this week’s event.

To Win: +3500 FanDuel

Top 20: +115 BetMGM

Rickie Fowler

I can’t advise anyone to back Rickie at his current market price, but for bookkeeping purposes, I want to note that he’s on my card this week. A rogue FanDuel line was available before he won in Detroit, and his win, combined with his immaculate form and a strong showing at the 2014 Open here in Hoylake has depressed his price beyond my interest. Still, I’d be stunned if he didn’t play well and compete this week.

To Win: +5600 FanDuel

Top 20: +105 BetMGM

FanDuel Finishing Position Parlays

Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood – T40 (+120)

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith, and Viktor Hovland – T40 (+285)

This is a relatively new entry to the space, thanks to our friends at FanDuel. If it’s not for you, feel free to skip it.

Unlike most other books I’m familiar with, FanDuel allows you to parlay finishing position bets. Now, the very premise of the bet is flawed because the expected value is negative since players are competing for the same finishing positions. If the bet is two T40s like this one, when one leg of your parlay finishes above the threshold, there’s now one less spot available in that range for the other leg(s) to also come in. I know the math is terrible. Spare me. But let’s be honest. Some bets are just fun, and these are fun for me.

For the most up-to-date picks, check out my Twitter and subscribe to our Discord at BetspertsGolf.com.

[14
29,123
post-8452","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","bs_type-betting","bs_tag-golf-betting","bs_tag-the-open
["GET
