It’s a traditional parkland venue with tree-lined fairways and flat topography. The Par-72 layout comes in at 7,370 yards, and without the penal areas off the tee and on approach, scoring opportunities will be plentiful. With the season entering the home stretch and the FedEx Cup Playoffs fast approaching, we’re seeing a stronger-than-normal field in Detroit, with 14 of the OWGR’s top 40 teeing it up with the hopes of securing a win along with the bump in points that come along with it.

Since the course does not penalize poor shots, there is little separation between great and below-average tee-to-green play. We’ve seen a wide array of golf styles compete at this event, so there’s not a perfect golfer archetype to hone in on this week. I’m leaning heaviest on strong wedge players (150 yards and in) with above-average form off the tee. Distance is a plus, though not a prerequisite, if a player shows strong wedge form and/or putting skills. The winning score has ranged between 18-26 under par in its short history.

For more course details, check out Ron’s course preview. It’s the best in the business, bar none. Here are a few interesting nuggets about Detroit Golf Club:

Fairways are generous and wider than average at over 34 yards, making them the 15th widest on Tour. With only one water hazard on the entire course, there are literally no forced layups or “danger” areas off the tee. Players are free to blast away with driver, which is evidenced by 78% of drives hit over 280 yards. Those with extra length will have wedges and short irons into greens on almost every par 4. Also, the softer conditions, thanks to the recent rainfall, will only lengthen the course.

Over 46% of approach shots come from under 150 yards, which is one of the highest wedge/short-iron rates on Tour. Thanks to a full set of par 5s and two longer par 3s, 21% of approaches also come from over 225 yards which are 4% higher than the average course. Even with the 12th smallest greens on Tour, these greens have one of the highest GIR rates anywhere.

My goal with this piece is to touch on the golfers I’m targeting this week. This feels like the perfect spot to back young, strong-pedigree golfers, and we’ve seen the likes of Collin Morikawa and Matthew Wolff come here early in their careers and have success.

Aberg has gained 6.2 and 4.2 strokes off the tee in his previous two starts, flashing elite distance and accuracy, a baseline skill that’ll thrive at any course. In his small sample of Tour starts, he’s dominated Par-5 scoring as well, ranking fifth in this field over the past 24 rounds, while also taking advantage of scoring opportunities on the greens in the 10-15 foot range, where he ranks 21st over that same time frame.

To Win: +6600 PointsBet

Top 40: +110 FanDuel

For this week's #RocketMortgageClassic birdie-fest where Par 5 Scoring will be critical, "Par 5: Birdie or Better %" and "Going For the Green BoB%" are metrics that should be included in your model this week.

Build your own unique model here: https://t.co/6BuuvnFt7m pic.twitter.com/VfNlDIzQ6N
— Ron Klos (@PGASplits101) June 27, 2023

Nicolai Hojgaard

Another elite pedigree bomber, Nicolai Hojgaard is a sneaky-strong fit for this track. He’s averaging roughly 325 yards per drive over his past 24 rounds, which ranks eighth in this field, and he pairs that distance with exceptional wedge play from 150 yards and in. Over that same time frame, Hojgaard ranks ninth in the field in birdie or better rate despite being a mediocre putter for most of his young career.

He’s flashed multiple T10 finishes this season, most recently in Italy on the D.P. Alex Smalley breaks that mold a bit. His recent form has been excellent, bagging four T25 or better finishes in his past five starts, including a T9 at last week’s Travelers.

He doesn’t have many “spiked” putting weeks in his game log, but his tee-to-green game is good enough to carry him into contention this week. He’s gained 4.8 strokes per event over his past five starts, and he posted a 17-under in Connecticut despite gaining just 0.11 strokes per round on the greens. He’ll find the fairway here at an elite rate and should be set up to feast on the numerous shorter Par 4s.

To Win: +7000 PointsBet

Top 40: -105 FanDuel

Justin Suh

I love the T40 price here on Justin Suh at +160, and I’m willing to back the best putter in the field to win outright, considering this is consistently referred to as a putting contest. Suh is the only golfer in the field who ranks inside the top 10 in putting from both 5-10 and 10-15 feet.

Suh was a top-tier prospect a few years back, routinely grouped together with Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, and Matthew Wolff when the next wave of up-and-coming golfers was discussed. Suh got off to a slower start, needing a bit more time to find his stride, but he won last year’s Korn Ferry Championship and has made 21 of his past 22 cuts on Tour. I’m afraid he doesn’t gain enough off the tee to truly contend here, but I liked the opening price at 75/1, and his floor is high due to his consistent ability to drain putts.

To Win: +7500 PointsBet

Top 40: +160 FanDuel

J.J. Spaun

Whenever J.J. Spaun gets it done, it’s on the back of a strong week tee-to-green. He’s not long off the tee, but he controls the ball well and is one of the better wedge players on Tour, ranking tenth in this field in proximity from 125-150 yards out. But for some reason, he LOVES these greens.

Spaun has gained strokes putting here in all four years, finishing no worse than T32, topped by last year’s T8. His average tee shot was nearly 13 yards shorter than the average ball off the tee last year, but his accuracy was 10% higher, and he gained over four strokes on approach and nearly six strokes on the greens. It proves there’s more than one way to skin a cat in Detroit. Last week’s T24 at the Travelers was Eckroat’s fifth straight T30 or better finish. Over his past five starts, he’s gained an average of 6.2 strokes per event tee-to-green and 2.8 strokes per event on approach.

Eckroat’s ability to find fairways with slightly above-average driving distance is a highly coveted skill this week. Over the past 24 rounds played, he’s second in this field in good drive% and third in total driving. His best recent finishes, a T2 at the Byron Nelson and a solo fifth at Corales, have come in spots where scores can get low. I’m going to continue to bet on Eckroat in the finishing position markets, but he’s playing well enough for me to consider him as an outright selection when his odds are this long. This week’s opening number was just too long, considering his current form and the strength of this field.

To Win: +9000 PointsBet

Top 40: +100 BetRivers

FanDuel Finishing Position Parlays

Rickie Fowler and Max Homa – T40 (+113)

This is a relatively new entry to the space, thanks to our friends at FanDuel. Now, the very premise of the bet is flawed because the expected value is negative since players are competing for the same finishing positions. If the bet is two T40s like this one, when one leg of your parlay finishes above the threshold, there’s now one less spot available in that range for the other leg(s) to also come in. I know the math is terrible. Spare me. But let’s be honest.
