Even among world-class golfers on the PGA Tour, consistency in performance can be as fleeting as a Detroit Lions winning streak. In one round the ball-striking is immaculate and the scorecard reads 65 while the next round is a struggle just to shoot even par. Given how much consistency is one of the most valued traits among athletes, golf is unique among professional sports because of the difficulty in having quality repeatable performances which can often be dependent on a wide array of variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, with the birth of a new PGA Tour season on the horizon, I thought it necessary to take a deep dive into the past 2021-2022 season to see what could be gleaned on the player level from a consistency perspective by looking at specific data points. While one season is not a huge sample size, through a variety of metrics we can still gain a snapshot into which players had the highest floors on a per-round basis from this past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive Rounds Strokes Gained Total Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the best ways to measure a player’s floor in golf is to determine the rate of positive rounds in which they gained strokes on the field. Here are the top 25 players in the percentage of rounds that gained total strokes on the field. Matt Fitzpatrick leads the way with the highest rate. One name that stood out to me on many of these rankings is Aaron Wise. Not known for being a consistent player over his career thus far, he has seemingly turned the corner in a big way. And adding in the fact that he has gained an average of 1.7 strokes putting per event over his last 10 tournaments, the sky is the limit for the 2022-2023 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounds 1-2 Positive Strokes Gained Total Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For those that play Daily Fantasy golf on DraftKings or FanDuel, the one-consuming goal that everyone is striving for is to get all six of the players in your lineup through the cut-line and into the weekend. Although it doesn’t guarantee you a high finish, having all six players with the ability to rack up points on the weekend greatly increases your chances of having a profitable week. With that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to analyze which players perform the best and are the most historically consistent in the first two rounds of an event, which in turn, would propel them past more cut lines. Tyrrell Hatton and Keith Mitchell were two somewhat surprising names that stood out as both being very consistent in the opening rounds of an event. That definitely translates to made cuts as Hatton made it to the weekend at an 87% clip this season while Mitchell was at 77%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive Rounds Strokes Gained Ball-Striking Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gaining strokes in ball-striking, and specifically on approach shots to the green, is the one skill that is most correlated to success on the PGA Tour. The list below shows the most consistently positive ball-strikers from this past season. There is no surprise with Will Zalatoris leading the way. Luke List has always been an elite ball-striker. Ranking second on this list just shows how consistent he is in that area as well. And to think of what could be if he was just an average putter. There was one notable drop on this list compared to last season. Collin Morikawa dropped from third last season to 21st in ball-striking consistency in 2021-2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive Rounds Strokes Gained Putting Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With putting being the most volatile of all the strokes gained categories, showing a level of consistency in gaining strokes from round to round is crucial for establishing a solid floor. Seeing names like Brendon Todd, Denny McCarthy and Lucas Herbert in the top ten is not surprising. Rory McIlroy finishing eighth on this list just shows how great of an all-around season he had this year. Also included in the chart is a consistency rate for gaining strokes from the all-important range of 5-15 feet. Lucas Herbert ranks best in that metric, followed by Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Brendon Todd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive Rounds Bogey Avoidance Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, avoiding bogeys (or worse) during a round is one of the keys to consistency in golf. This past season, there was no player better at consistently avoiding bogeys than Rory McIlroy. Matt Fitzpatrick finished second in that area and is another name that finishes high on almost every one of these rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall Consistency Rating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In summing up each of these categories (with the exception of the Rounds 1-2 metric) a basic Consistency Rating was established. Below is the entire list of the 221 players who played at least 14 PGA Tour rounds during the 2021-2022 season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
