Known as the Honda Classic for much of its existence, the tournament will be hosted once again by the Champion course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Typically, PGA National has provided a brutal start to the Florida Swing, routinely ranking among the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. That shifted in 2024 when officials reconfigured the layout from a par 70 to a par 71, converting the demanding 10th hole into a par 5 and immediately adding a new scoring opportunity.

However, the more significant change may have been agronomic. The course began overseeding fairways and rough with rye grass, replacing the previously dormant Bermuda surfaces used before 2024. Dormant Bermuda tends to play firmer and more unpredictable — particularly around the greens — while rye produces softer, more receptive conditions. The changes have led to a noticeable drop in scoring averages and a far more forgiving test overall.

Prior to 2024, the average winning score was -10, and PGA National had been one of the toughest non-major courses on TOUR. Since the course changes two years ago, the average winning score has jumped to -18. Last year, PGA National played the easiest in its history at an average of -1.74 per round. A record 38 golfers shot -10 or better. From 2006-2023, only 11 total golfers shot 10-under or better.

The winner has been either a pre-tournament favorite or a true longshot in 14 of the past 16 years, underscoring the event’s boom or bust nature. Much of that volatility stems from the layout itself. With water in play on 15 holes, the most on TOUR, penalty areas serve as the course’s primary defense and can quickly derail a round.

Unlike more tree lined parkland venues, PGA National features relatively sparse tree coverage and sits just seven miles from the Atlantic Ocean, leaving it vulnerable to shifting coastal winds. Success here typically requires a balanced combination of sharp ball striking and a reliable short game, along with the discipline to avoid penalty areas and control trajectory in the breeze.

Success here will also depend highly upon the player’s ability to navigate the closing stretch of intimidating holes, which is famously known as the “Bear Trap”. The 15th and 17th holes are long par-3s over water, while the 16th is a forced layup to another approach shot over water.

The Field

After consecutive Signature Events featuring the best players in the world, the 123-player field at the Cognizant Classic will only have nine of the top-50 ranked golfers. It is a prototypical Florida layout and one of the flattest courses on Tour, lacking in significant elevation or architectural flair. With that in mind, much like The Concession Golf Club, Jack Nicklaus injected difficulty and visual drama into the design by incorporating water hazards throughout the course.

Trouble lurks at every turn, as strategic bunkering and 26 water hazards spread across 15 holes define the property. Ten holes feature water in play off the tee, and eight require approach shots that must carry a hazard, placing a premium on precision and disciplined iron play. Over the last five years, players are averaging 0.54 double bogeys or worse per round, the highest on Tour.

Another factor that has traditionally made PGA National one of the more difficult courses on Tour is the prevalence of gusty winds. Nearly every year, at least one or two rounds are played in conditions where winds exceed 20 miles per hour. The breeze not only disrupts ball flight but also firms up and dries out the greens, making approach shots far more difficult to hold. Combining persistent wind with water hazards on so many holes creates the perfect formula for big numbers and scorecards that can unravel quickly.

While the length is short by average standards at just 7,223 yards, it plays much longer with eight par-4s measuring longer than 420 yards. Many of the holes that face directly into the wind will play even longer. The 550-yard par-5 18th hole is a perfect example of this. It plays at a yardage that should be easily reachable in two shots except when the prevailing winds are blowing, which happens more often than not.

As Tommy Fleetwood said a couple of years ago, “The wind is a massive factor all the way around the golf course. I feel like there are so many cross-winds that bring misses off the tee, into the greens, cross-winds affect the putts, and it’s just an all-around very, very difficult test, and it tests everyone. It tests every part of your game.”

Along with the breezy conditions and abundant water hazards, another defining element of the Florida swing is the return to Bermuda grass. While the fairways and 3″ rough (up from 2.5″ last year) are overseeded with rye grass because of the cooler seasonal conditions, the greens remain Bermuda turf.

The putting surfaces are relatively large, averaging roughly 7,000 square feet, and typically run around 12 on the Stimpmeter, placing an added premium on touch and comfort on grainy Bermuda greens.

Hole Preview

PGA National has traditionally featured the toughest collection of par 3s on Tour. That said, another reason the course has begun to play easier is that several of those tee boxes have been moved forward. Two still measure longer than 215 yards and three have water in play, but the overall challenge has been softened compared to previous years.

With the once brutal 10th hole now converted into a reachable par 5, the overall scoring profile has shifted. The par 4s, historically the backbone of the course’s difficulty, have collectively lost some of their bite. Last year, the three par 5s played to a combined average of 0.53 under par, with the 10th ranking as the easiest hole on the course at 0.77 under par. That dramatic swing underscores how much more emphasis is now placed on par 5 scoring than in past editions.

Though they have also played easier the past two years, the “Bear Trap”, holes Nos. 15-17 get most of the notoriety and are among the most arduous three-hole stretches of golf on the PGA Tour. In all reality, the 14th and 18th holes could easily be added to this tough closing section. 89% of golfers that have played PGA National have a career scoring average over par on the “Bear Trap”, and some years every single player in the field had at least one bogey on these holes.

Along with having water in play, each hole in the Bear Trap is frequently played straight into the prevailing east northeast wind, adding another layer of difficulty to an already demanding stretch. It begins with the 175 yard par 3 15th, where the hole location is often cut on the back right portion of the green. Players must contend with bunkers guarding the left side and water lurking to the right. With an average birdie rate of just 12 percent, it consistently ranks among the toughest par 3s on Tour.

The 16th is a 434 yard par 4 that has played noticeably easier over the past two years. What once produced a bogey or worse rate of 24 percent has dropped to 16 percent. The hole doglegs right, with water running the entire length of that side of the fairway. The landing area also tilts toward the hazard, increasing the risk off the tee. Players who choose a safer line down the left side are then faced with an approach shot that must carry directly over the water, leaving little margin for error.

The 175 yard par 3 17th has annually ranked as the toughest hole on the course. Once again, players must navigate bunkers guarding the left side of the green and water looming to the right, leaving little room for a miss in either direction.

However, the past two editions of the tournament have seen the hole play considerably easier. What previously produced a bogey or worse rate of 27 percent has dropped to 16 percent, a significant reduction that reflects the broader scoring shift at PGA National.

Course redesigner Jack Nicklaus said it best regarding the “Bear Trap” when he said, “It should all be won or lost here. Because penalty areas dictate ideal landing zones, golfers are often forced to play positionally, which can make the course play longer than its scorecard yardage.

While distance and accuracy are helpful, they are not prerequisites for success. Even at up to three inches, the overseeded rye rough is not especially penal, so the priority is simply keeping the ball in play and avoiding water hazards and fairway bunkers. That task is complicated by landing areas squeezed by sand and bordered by lakes and ponds throughout the property. Over the past three years, PGA National has produced more water balls off the tee than any other course on Tour.

The abundance of doglegs and hazards frequently forces players to club down, leading to one of the shortest average driving distances on Tour at just 281 yards. Even with less than driver in hand, driving accuracy hovers around a modest 60 percent. The combination of water danger, conservative strategy, average accuracy, and clustered landing zones means that, despite the course playing easier overall, PGA National still ranks as the fifth toughest venue on Tour in strokes gained off the tee.

Justin Thomas: If you’re driving it well, you can play this course well and make a lot of pars and sprinkle in some birdies and you’re going to beat a lot of the field. Thanks to the ultra-soft greens, the GIR rate last year jumped to 70%. In the five years prior, however, it has averaged closer to 60%.
