We were all provided with a thrilling finish for the 124th U.S. Open on Sunday, and most of the top players are back at it this week, with the season’s last signature event on tap. This is a demanding stretch of golf, and I’ll be fascinated to see who’s up for the challenge for the third week in a row. Muirfield Village presented a daunting task as a lead-in event to last week’s third major championship of the season. While this week’s track, TPC River Highlands, isn’t nearly as demanding, it requires a strategic game plan and precision.

The 2024 Travelers Championship brings us to the last Pete Dye course of the season. The par-70 layout stretches out to 6,835 yards from the tips, the third-shortest course on Tour this season. In past years, we’ve seen a wide array of skill sets show up to Cromwell, Connecticut, and win, which is what Pete Dye sets out to do in all of his designs. Play the best for four days, and you win. What a concept.

Unlike the Memorial signature event a few weeks ago, the Travelers is a no-cut event. If Rory McIlroy decided to take a few days off, I don’t think any of us would be surprised, but as of this writing, we’re looking at a 72-man field. (update: He’s OUT. Don’t blame him.)

For more course details, check out Ron’s course preview. It’s by far the best in the business. Here’s an important tidbit about River Highlands:

When the field arrives in Cromwell this week, they will find a course that has undergone some “competitive enhancements” thanks to how low the scoring was last year, combined with Rory McIlroy’s comments about technology having rendered the layout obsolete. While length has not been added, six holes experienced significant changes.

The agronomy for this week features 4-plus inch Bluegrass/Fescue rough and a Bentgrass/Poa annua mixture on the greens and fairways. Numerous lakes and ponds add to the course’s beauty, although only five holes have water in play. In Pete Dye fashion, the course (mostly on the back nine) does entice players into taking shots over some of these water hazards. The penal rough stands out as the course’s best defense. Players who end up off the fairway and in trouble will be forced to layup instead of going for the green with their approach shot.

It has one of the lowest average driving distances on Tour at only 284 yards. With fairways being the 10th most narrow and many holes being tree-lined doglegs, many players club down and use less-than-driver from the tee. Perhaps the bigger reason players club down is some of the most penal rough that has been grown to 4+ inches long for this week.

To prevent a complete birdie-fest, the pin positions on the greens are typically in tougher locations. A Pete Dye course is not just going to give away birdies. Many of the green complexes are also angled away from the directional path of the hole.

The green surfaces are a combination of “northeastern” Poa annua and bentgrass. This is not the bumpy inconsistent “west coast” Poa that is often complained about out west.

Remember to check out the Rabbit Hole, our customizable stat database that can help you pair down your player pool each week.

Please take advantage of the Discord feature and community. Henley’s T7 finish was a fourth top-ten in his past nine starts. The field will be taking less-than-driver off the tee on multiple holes this week, which brings the field back to Henley a bit, and the rest of his game is up to the challenge.

I knew that, going into the model-building process, Henley would show well, but I was surprised to see him emerge as the third-ranked player in my model this week. He’s the best short par-4 player in the field over the past two years, and nine of this week’s 12 par 4’s are 445 yards and shorter. I also looked at Good Drive% when the missed fairway penalty is high and when the field was forced to do anything other than blindly bomb away, and Henley came out on top of that data set as well. So far this season, Scottie Scheffler is the only golfer on the planet who’s been better than Henley from 100-150 yards out.

Par 4 efficiency – Short and Very Short Courses, Last 2 Years

The 50s that were available at open have dried up, but he’s available at plus money to finish inside the top 20 again, which is a low bar to clear in this 72-man field.

To Win: +5000 FanDuel

Top 20: +110 FanDuel

Tom Kim

I like how Tom Kim is trending right now, and I’m particularly encouraged by his recent iron play. Last year’s winner, Keegan Bradley, was playing exceptionally well and had a legitimate case to be on the Ryder Cup team in the fall, but the leaderboard behind him showed what’s possible here.
