Pinehurst Resort, located in North Carolina between Fayetteville and Charlotte, is home to 10 unique golf courses, with course “No. 2” being the belle of the ball.

Swing into Cash on FanDuel Faceoff with Jordan Spieth’s Fairway Frenzy During the US Open!

The Donald Ross-designed Pinehurst no. 2 was restored to its original layout in 2010 by the renowned team of Coore and Crenshaw. They removed all the lush rough from the property, giving the course a drastically different appearance compared to a typical U.S. Open track. Instead of rough lining the fairways, stray shots will encounter a landscape that resembles the natural topography of Carolina. If your tee shot misses the fairway, you’ll find firm native sand littered with small wiregrass mounds and pine straw. Like any major championship course, Pinehurst No. 2 challenges every aspect of a golfer’s game. Success this week will depend on patience, level-headedness, creative shotmaking, and strategic positioning from tee to green.

The fairways and greens are expected to play firm and fast, with subtle elevation changes and false fronts, so distance control and precision when approaching greens will be crucial. There are multiple strategies for playing each hole, which is part of what makes this place so unique, but players with accuracy off the tee, strong long-iron skills, and a sharp short game will have the best chance to compete.

Pinehurst is notorious for its diabolically crowned green complexes, which act like upturned saucers or turtle shells. The challenge lies in the ability to hold your approach shot on the greens, which are designed to deflect balls in all directions as you get closer to the hole. You’ll hear them referred to as upside-down bowls, volcanoes, or turtle backs, and the tightly mowed runoff areas and false fronts around the green funnel shots away from the hole, forcing the field to chip back up off of short grass or try their hand with long, uphill putts from off the green surface.

For more course details, check out Ron’s course preview. It’s the best in the business, but there are none. Here’s an important tidbit about Pinehurst No. 2:

Measuring 7,543 yards, the par 70 “Carolina Sandhills” course located 92 miles east of Charlotte is a beast of a track. With only two par5s, Pinehurst No. 2 ranks as the fifth-longest course (yards per par) on the PGA Tour since 2015. Scoring can be brutal. In the most recent U.S. Open hosted here in 2014, the average round played at +3.08. It is the fourth toughest course on Tour in that same period with only Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot, and Oakmont playing more difficult.

The beauty of Pinehurst is that it doesn’t dictate any particular style of golf. Instead, it allows you to play your own game with multiple choices on almost every single hole. Golfers have the option to play an aerial game and bomb it down the fairway, followed by a lofted iron into the treacherous greens. Likewise, shorter hitters can club down and play longer iron shots and use the firm fairways to run them up onto the greens.

The natural terrain combined with its design features accentuates the penalty for mediocre shots. Whether it’s the sandy waste areas that are chock-full of vegetation or the swales and slopes and tight lies of the diabolical green complexes, at Pinehurst, it truly is a game of inches. A fractional miss can result in a massive number on the scorecard. A lucky bounce can lead to a birdie chance. This randomness and increased range of outcomes on every hole only adds to the excitement of the tournament.

Remember to check out the Rabbit Hole, our customizable stat database that can help you pair down your player pool each week.

Please take advantage of the Discord feature and community. Scottie Scheffler’s current run is almost without a historical peer. His win at last week’s Memorial, Scheffler’s fifth win in his past eight starts, makes him the first golfer with five wins on the year prior to the U.S. Open since Tom Watson back in 1980. If you’re looking for a better comp, including a major championship among the five wins, you have to go back to Arnold Palmer in 1962. Wins at Bay Hill, Sawgrass, Augusta, Harbour Town, and Muirfield Village are career highlights for most, and Scheffler has managed to win these events against the best fields in the pro game in a matter of three months.

Take Scheffler and any Tour pro out to your local muni, and chances are they’ll shoot a pretty similar number. These are all exceptional talents, and when the course doesn’t demand much, they’ll all flourish. However, elite professional golfers can separate from their peers when the course demands precision, and that’s what’s required at Pinehurst this week.

Scheffler’s tee-to-green game has never been an issue, and now he’s gaining strokes putting in every start. In fact, over the past three years (or 75 rounds played), Scheffler has gained strokes tee-to-green in 93.75% of his rounds played. If that sounds like a lot, it’s because it is. Only 13 other golfers have gained strokes tee-to-green at a 70%+ clip, and no one else has topped Xander Schauffele’s 79.66%.

Last 3 Years (75 Rounds) % of Rounds Gained

Scheffler’s ability to control his ball off the tee and move it both ways will come in handy here, and his top spot in one of this week’s crucial stats, distance from the edge of the fairway, speaks to that ability. It’s unique for someone to showcase top-tier distance while still maintaining control off the tee. Regardless of the same size, Scheffler is the best second-shot player in this field, and if he happens to miss the green, he ranks second in the field in scrambling from the short grass, with soft hands and a creative eye that rarely shows up in a player with so much power.

I understand that some shy away from betting short favorites in a sport with so much variance and so many participants, but I can’t think of a course on this planet, perhaps other than Augusta National, that’s better suited for Scottie Scheffler’s game that what Pinehurst No. 2 is going to demand this weekend. I jumped on the last remaining 4/1 in the market over the weekend and pushed it out to subscribers. He’s also ninth in this week’s field in SG: APP on courses where it’s difficult to hit a Greens in Regulation (GIR), and the general consensus is that greens will be difficult to hold this week. With scrambling inevitable due to the low GIR rate, Matsuyama’s around-the-green game is a prerequisite this week. Hideki has gained strokes around the green in a field-best 75.56% of his rounds in 2024 and ranks 11th this year in scrambling from the short grass.

To Win (without Scheffler): 40/1 FanDuel

Top 20: +165 Caesars

Russell Henley

Russell Henley has posted a handful of strong showings at the U.S. Open over the years, including a T14 at L.A.C.C. last year, and his best performance in a major, a T4 finish at the 2023 Masters, is encouraging as well. When you lack elite distance off the tee, the needle hole required to compete gets harder to thread, but I expect to see a few non-bombers near the top of this leaderboard on Sunday afternoon.

Taking less-than-driver off the tee is on the table on multiple holes, which brings the field back to Henley a bit, and the rest of his game is up to the challenge. The Georgia native will find fairways at an elite clip, avoiding the sandy wasteland that will wreak havoc on the field. He’s an exceptional iron player, and his short game is excellent, particularly on these bermudagrass greens in the southeast.

More sportsbooks will eventually post these ‘without’ markets, but this FanDuel price is better than some ‘with Scheffler’ prices currently available for Henley.

To Win (without Scheffler): 65/1 FanDuel

Top 30: +130 DraftKings

My Final Pinehurst No. 2 Model

[14
29,118
post-11112","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","bs_type-betting","bs_tag-golf-betting","bs_tag-u-s-open
https://api.betspertsgolf.com/raw-forum/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/gettyimages-1491031125-612x612-1.jpg
["GET
