The Players One and Done Strategy and Picks: Taming TPC Sawgrass

API Recap

Not my finest week, but I guess that’s what I get for turning my back on a long-time friend (and enemy) of my bankroll, Russell Henley.  Tough look for me using Xander.  Turns out hitting it into the fairway bunker and then into the water isn’t a winning strategy.

Last week’s picks

Big Guns

Rory McIlroy T15
Ludvig Åberg T22
Xander Schauffele T40

Need to get unique?

Tommy Fleetwood T11
Sungjae Im T19
Sam Burns T48

Either way, we’re on the TPC Sawgrass where the field is elite, the water if plentiful, and the purse is MASSSSSSSIVE. (purse rankings)

Cut Makers

It’s an elite field, so I don’t want to waste time looking at who makes the cuts when so many guys do at like an 80% clip.  This isn’t going to make the list a ton different, but I did sort by top 5% (last two years) instead.  The big three on top here, but as always, a nice sized gap between Mr Scheffler and the next tier.  Interestingly enough, last week’s running up/melter is pretty much in that same tier as Rory and Xander as far as finishing in the top 5

Ball Striking

It’s a tough course, the greens are small and we’ve all seen what get it done here.  Staying in trouble off the tee and finding the right quadrant of the green on approach.  Sorted Ball Striking numbers for the past rolling 12 months, and boom, more of the same top names, but I did wonder which member of “team can’t putt” would show up, and Doug Ghim is even higher than I had supposed.  Still more confirmation for the obviously guys and some much needed validation for the Sepp Straka crowd. (see the whole field on the site)

Water Danger

It’s Florida; there’s a bunch of water. Hell, one of the greens is an island.  I wanted to sort out some of the rounds up in Minnesota, so I set the water danger filter to high but then also took out any “easy” scoring rounds and “easy” fields.  Again, the big names, but it’s still probably fine to ignore Viktor Hovland until we see it in the short term.  He’s been much to volatile to use this week.

The Players One and Done Picks

It’s the biggest purse of the season; it’s not a time to get timid and throw a wildcard out there.  Grab who you’re most confident in here and let ‘er rip.  The winner gets a ton of money and is catapulted up the leaderboard.  Big guns only this week.  It’s not a no-brainer, you still want to find the correct big gun, but I think this is the list you want to work off of, even if your a ways down the leaderboard, there are better weeks to get cute and catch up.

Scottie Scheffler
Rory McIlroy
Collin Morikawa
Xander Schauffele
Tommy Fleetwood
Ludvig Åberg
