2022 Wyndham Championship Round 4 Overview

Ahhh, the infamous Southern pop-up thunderstorms. Play has been suspended for the second day in a row at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. Friday’s second-round delay left four golfers on the course to finish on Saturday morning. One of those golfers, Austin Smotherman suffered a cruel ending to his tournament and perhaps to his Tour card itself by missing a birdie putt on the 17th hole and then proceeding to double-bogey the 18th to miss the cut completely. Third-round action will be much further behind as storms forced play to be suspended on Saturday with 74 golfers needing to finish starting at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning before the fourth round can begin.

It is expected that the final round will commence around 9:30 AM with players again going out as threesomes off both the first and tenth tees. What is unknown at the moment is whether players will be regrouped based on their position at the conclusion of the third round. Similar to yesterday, that uncertainty is one of the reasons there will not be a betting matchup sheet tonight. And with a lack of complete data and unknown finish positions heading into Sunday, I will instead discuss some possible live outright adds and Showdown suggestions for the final round.

Weather Forecast – Greensboro, NC

Well, Sunday’s weather looks about as perfect as can be with light winds and no predicted precipitation. But guess what? Saturday’s forecast looked almost exactly similar. Hopefully, by starting play so early in the day, any afternoon storms that pop up will come after play has already been completed.

Best Live Outright Adds

With pre-tournament outrights on Sungjae Im (co-leader), Davis Riley (two shots back), Russell Henley (two shots back) and Alex Smalley (four shots back), I am not looking to add anyone for the final 25+ holes tomorrow. If you jumped on Lahiri when I recommended him as a live add after Thursday’s round when he was five shots back and +7000 you would be sitting in a good position as he is currently two shots off the lead. Here are my three favorite adds going into tomorrow. All three are tremendous iron players on approach who will look to take advantage of the receptive greens after the rainfall from Saturday.

  • Alex Smalley – 4 shots back (+4000 DraftKings) – Smalley continues to be disrespected with these odds. He has sank a number of clutch putts on his home course which shows how well he knows these greens since putting is his main weakness. He has surprisingly lost strokes overall with his irons which is typically his strength. If he can rebound in that area tomorrow I really like his chances to make a run at the top.
  • Aaron Wise – 3 shots back (+1500 FanDuel) – Wise was on fire with five birdies through 14 holes on Saturday and was gaining in every area of the game. He is maturing into a very consistent performer before our eyes. With a par-5 birdie hole coming up, his odds are most likely to change very dramatically one way or the other based on the result.
  • Davis Riley – 2 shots back (+900 DraftKings) – With four birdies through 11 holes, Riley was heavily reliant on his putter on Saturday. That being said, he is typically one of the best iron players in this field and should benefit from the soft greens. Looking for his first tournament victory, he should be primed to make a run.

Favorite Showdown Plays

  • Sungjae Im $10.7K – Probably the second most talented player in the field (behind Will Zalatoris) and in the best position to win. Clutch putter on Bermuda. Gaining 0.92 strokes over his last 24 Sunday rounds.
  • Joohyung Kim $9.8K – Seemingly unphased by anything as he began the tournament with a “Snowman 8” on the first hole and has shot 15-under par since. Definitely the hottest player in the field and only sitting one shot off the lead. Second in the field gaining 1.44 strokes in 11 career Sunday rounds.
  • Wise $9.3K, Riley $8.7K, Smalley 8.0K – see above
  • Keith Mitchell $8.4K – I have been on Mitchell all week, and he had a very up-and-down partial Saturday round with five birdies and four bogeys. His streakiness and ability go on birdie runs make him a very intriguing option tomorrow. If he can dial in his approach games he has the firepower to climb into the top-ten.

Value Plays

  • Andrew Putnam $7.4K
  • Anirban Lahiri $7.8K
  • Matthew NeSmith $7.6K
  • Callum Tarren $7.1K
  • Taylor Moore $7.5K
  • Sam Ryder $6.6K
  • Max McGreevy $6.0K
