Sam Burns Wins Valspar Championship. Again.
A week after making a push at THE PLAYERS but stumbling down the stretch, Sam Burns had his redemption moment, winning his second consecutive Valspar Championship. After playing well last week and his win last year, Burns was one of the favorites entering action at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook on Thursday with outright odds at +2500. This weekend’s action saw plenty of drama as Burns outlasted tour-rookie Davis Riley in a playoff, as well as having to hold off the chasing Matthew NeSmith and Justin Thomas. The win moves Burns into the Top 10 of the World Golf Rankings for the first time, bumping Dustin Johnson out of the Top 10 for the first time in seven years. Burns also cashed his Top-5 bet at +510, Top-10 bet at +310, and Top-20 bet at +200.
Other Notables:
- Just like last week at THE PLAYERS, we were very close to seeing a longshot underdog cash a huge outright only to fall just short. Davis Riley was +16100 to win the Valspar when action teed off on Thursday. He did cash his Top-5 bet at +2400, Top-10 bet at +1400, and Top-20 bet at +700, though. If you were on Riley every which way this weekend, it was a nice profit.
- Justin Thomas was the biggest name near the top of the leaderboard this weekend. He fired three consecutive 66s in Rounds 1-3, but Sunday’s 1-under 70 kept him a shot shy of the playoff with Burns and Riley. Thomas has been right there several times already this season and seems like he’s ready to breakout. Thomas teed off on Thursday as the outright favorite on FanDuel at +1100. His Top-5 bet at +350, Top-10 bet at +235, and Top-20 bet at +162 all hit.
