The duo of Xander Schaffele and Patrick Cantlay shot a 4-under 68 in the alternate shot format of the event to maintain a one-shot lead after the second round of the Zurich Classic. Along with winds increasing throughout the round, players were tested much more than the best-ball format from Thursday’s opening round.
After the round, Cantlay said, “It was definitely more difficult playing alternate shot. I think 4-under is really good considering the circumstances with the wind and our round yesterday. I think it sets a really good tone going into the weekend.” He and Schauffele set the 36-hole tournament record at 17-under.
The teams of Sam Ryder and Doc Redman and David Lipsky and Aaron Rai each shot 67s on the day and sit one shot back of the lead. In all, 39 teams made the cut, and they will return to best-ball play in Saturday’s third round. We should see a return to the birdie-fest that best-ball usually presents. With that in mind, I will be targeting teams with birdie or better potential to go low on Saturday, along with teams that have weekend experience in this team event.
